May 2002 Meeting Minutes

Hello Theatre Guild!

Well, this is what happens when we don’t have a meeting for a few months. There’s a lot to tell, so bear with me.

As usual, we start with a finance report. Anne Turnbull, our illustrious treasurer, told us that Fiddler’s total income was $6,144. This does not include expenses and we’re still waiting on one refund, but when the tally comes in, profits from the show will be over $3,000! Yay! Cue wild applause!

With that in mind, President Bill Turnbull thought we might take some of that hard-earned money and buy some new gadgets to make our shows even better. For Fiddler, we borrowed several nifty items from Edgren’s drama department and we were impressed. For one, they had headsets that allowed Bill, Gaytha (Fiddler stage manager) and the rest of our excellent stage crew to make snide comments about the actors without being overheard… er… I mean, allowed them to improve communication and smooth out problems. That said, the voting members present approved a motion to purchase six of our own at $59.95 each plus shipping for a total of about $400. We also borrowed a pair of microphones that helped our voices fill the Mokuteki. The voting members agreed that, with the money in the bank to do so, the purchase of a pair of these sturdy devices, for about $530 (including shipping), would be a worthy expenditure.

The Summer Drama Camp will help Misawa youth to experience the thrill of putting on a small production while learning all aspects of theatre. This year, we are putting it on in conjunction with the Family Support Center, which will allow volunteers free childcare. Speaking of which, if you can help teach children some facet of producing a show, please let Anne Turnbull know (222-5926). They’re looking for folks who know tech work, painting, set building, make-up, costuming, etc. We also still need people to man the registration tables at the BX on 25 May and 1 June from 11 AM - 4 PM. The fee for the camp is undecided. With the support of the FSC, it was discussed that we might not charge at all.

The Man Who Came To Dinner is rolling slowly forward. The tentative schedule has been set before the board for approval. Barring any vetoes from them, auditions will take place on 29 & 30 Aug with the performances on 21, 22, & 23 Nov (assuming the Mokuteki agrees to those dates as well). Shawn Wallace, who painted our gorgeous flats for Fiddler, will be designing the set.

No, it isn’t too early to start thinking about it! Propositions from potential directors for a spring 2003 show are welcome. We have proven the success of big name musicals, but that is by no means a requirement. If you have an idea (or don’t have an idea but would still like to direct something), send the guild a mail at the address below or call Bill Turnbull at 222-5926.

The book-recording project for Edgren has finally begun! I know some of you have been hearing about this for a year or so, but for those who haven’t: The Guild agreed to record books on tape for children who, for one reason or another, cannot read themselves. There is also a small set of books for ESL kids. We have the books, tapes, and recorders. We need to get them completed by the end of summer, so that they will be available for the 2002-03 school year. There are both textbooks and literature. Recording sessions will be held at Eldorado. If you can’t make these, it is possible to check out a tape recorder and do it at home. The list of available books is shrinking fast so call Richard Bennett (222-6871) soon to get a good one!

One of the Guild’s best ways of dragging in new victims... ahem... recruiting new talent is the weekly Info Fair, held before the drivers’ course at the O Club (or E Club, we never can tell, really). But to do that, we need people at the table! We try to have at least two people there each week. The time passes faster that way. But even so, it’s less than an hour out of your schedule. Set up is at 12:30 PM and most of the time, they are done by 1:20 PM. It’s held every Monday. (The exception is the first Monday of the month, when the Clubs are closed for maintenance. In this case, it is held that Tuesday.) If you can help convince newcomers to Misawa that we’re the best past time out there, please contact Bill Turnbull (222-5926) or send a response to this e-mail. The dates we need filled are below:

  • May 28 (need 1 person)
  • July 8 (need 1 person), 22, 29
  • August 6, 12, 19, 26
  • September 3, 9 (need 1 person), 16 (need 1 person), 23, 30

After every show, the Eldorado suffers from a bit of wear and tear. Following the final performance, nobody even wants to see the place for a good long while. Well, the good long while has passed and it’s time for an Eldorado Clean-up! On 22 June we’re going to make a morning of it starting at 10 AM. Please come help, because the more people we have, the quicker it will go. And the more food will be there. Yes, I did just say food! The Turnbulls have hinted that they may bring the grill and we’ll eat when we’re done. So bring some food and wear old clothes.

Our August meeting will include new board elections. If you’d like to run for office or know someone you think would be good at it, keep an eye out. We’ll be asking for submissions soon. The new board will take the reins in October.

The Guild secretary has agreed to update our website to include pictures from Farndale and Fiddler. Personally, I think she’s nuts what with all the work involved in keeping... oh wait, I’m the secretary, aren’t I? Dang.

The final bit of business at the meeting (yes, it did eventually come to a close) was this year’s scholarship awards. With two checks to hand out and only two submissions, the choice wasn’t all that hard. However, everyone did not get a chance to read the essays, so final word should be out on that soon.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is indeed the end.

Until the next meeting,
Beth Bennett
