August 2002 Meeting Minutes

Hello Guild members! This meeting minutes mail (alliteration included for a certain stage manager) is coming to you a little late, because my computer decided it was time to retire. His replacement is up and running, so it’s time to fill you all in on Guild business.

First, we had a guest speaker at this meeting. Mr. Sean Harris has approached the Guild looking for actors and tech crew. Perhaps the Star Wars fans among you have visited theforce.net. Those of you who have not may want to do so now. Their fan film section should be of special interest, because Sean and his associates have written a 30-40 minute original script and have asked the Guild’s participation. The film will be of professional quality with blue screen and cgi work. Shooting will take place over two (non-consecutive) Saturdays for a total of about 16 hours of filming. Total cast needed is 10-12 people plus tech crew. The storyline, a space soap opera in the style of the original movies, takes place between Episodes I & II. The ending of this segment will be a cliffhanger, so if everybody likes the results, we can continue! Interested parties should be aware that there is no budget for the film, so individuals may be asked to provide certain props and costuming accessories out of their own pockets, probably no more than $30-$40. We are invited to attend a production meeting on 14 September in the MEC house (SCREAM’s old digs, across from Edgren’s parking lot). If you have any further questions, direct them to Sean Harris at [Webmaster's note: As he is not a Guild member, I removed Mr. Harris's e-mail address. If you do not have the origianl e-mail, drop a line to the guild via the link at the bottom of this page. We'll forward it.]

Treasurer’s Report: “We have money!” Our current bank balance is $6,150.09. Even taking into account that we have not yet purchased the microphones and headsets mentioned in May’s minutes, that still leaves us more than set for the next production… or two! Since the last meeting, we gave out $300 in scholarships for Edgren students and spent about $70 on the drama camp (mostly on food, since supplies were donated by the Family Support Center).

Speaking of the drama camp, it was a great success. The theme was “Exploring Japanese Culture Through Drama.” The older children (13-18) had a group of six kids who produced a Japanese fairytale with a modern twist. The 10-12 year olds put on a great Kabuki-style play (with 75 people, including General Utterback, in attendance). The children learned about and participated in production from planning to tear down. Anne Turnbull suggested that next year’s camp be one week for children ages 10-18 from 8AM to 4PM. She would also like to find locals from the Misawa community to provide further insight into Japanese drama and perhaps include a field trip to a Kabuki theater. At our next meeting, we’ll begin the planning stages for 2003. A special thanks from the Guild to Abbie Olson, Anne Turnbull, Anna Erickson, and Amy Tjaden for all the time and effort they put into the drama camp.

The book reading continues! Sadly, we’re only about halfway through the books that Edgren gave us. We will continue, despite the school year having already started, until all the books are complete. We’ve had a great deal of trouble getting the textbooks read. If you can come out to Eldorado and read (just a chapter or two!) keep an eye on your e-mail. Announcements about weekend reading sessions will be forthcoming.

Auditions for The Man Who Came To Dinner are this week! We’ll see you on 29 or 30 August (or both if you really like) in Tower 116, 6:30 – 9:00 PM. If you can’t stay for the entire session, that’s all right. Come in and let the director, Richard Bennett, know you have limited time. I have it on the best authority that he’s a softy and pretty easygoing (at least until rehearsals begin… then he has designs on Bill Turnbull’s Evil Director title). Further information can be obtained from Richard at farseerus@yahoo.com or 222-6871.

We still need people to man the info fair. We have folks signed up through September (thank you, thank you, thank you!) but come October the sign-up sheet is blank. Get in touch with Beth Bennett (that’s me) at 222-6871 or vestenraider@yahoo.com if you can lend a hand helping to rope in more volunteers for the Guild as they enter the Misawa community… before they have the excuse of having signed up for too many other things!

The snows haven’t even begun, but here in the Guild we can smell the April showers and May flowers already, which is why we have to begin planning for the spring production. Andy Cosner would like to direct A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He was looking for an Assistant Director before making the official proposal to the Guild. When I last saw him, he had a couple of offers, but if you’re interested in helping him you can still give him a holler at 222-5449 or gadget@paganguy.org. (When thinking about calling, please bear in mind that Andy-san works nights.) This doesn’t mean that other potential directors should not prepare a proposal. If you have something you would like to direct, drop a line to the board via the guild e-mail (misawatg@yahoo.com). Proposals must be on our collective virtual desk by 1 November.

And on to the meaty bits! Most of you should be aware that we elected new Guild officers at our last meeting. This year we thought we’d change the procedure a little. We had mud wrestling on the lawn between opposing candidates… Okay, maybe not. When all the motions and seconds and other official-sounding words were done, these were the results:

President: Richard Bennett
Vice President: Sondra Edmunds
Secretary: Beth Bennett (Oh no! Not again!)
Treasurer: Bobbie Severson-Olson
Publicity: Andy Cosner

The new board takes over on 1 October after killing and eating their predecessors. No, wait… that can’t be right… Perhaps I’d better just close this now, hm?

The next meeting is in November! We’ll keep you posted.
